The Goulburn Convoy for Kids recently rolled through the streets once again, transforming a regular day into a powerful spectacle of community spirit and generosity.

This incredible event saw hundreds of trucks, adorned with lights and decorations, parade through Goulburn, all for a profoundly important cause. The roar of engines was a sound of hope, signaling another year of incredible support for children in need.

For 26 years, this campaign has been a labor of love for the Goulburn community. This event builds on countless committee meetings, dedicated local businesses, and the seamless cooperation of council and police.

This year-long effort culminates in a spectacular, seven-hour event that unites the entire region. The passionate men and women of the trucking industry are its driving force.

The Driving Force Behind the Goulburn Convoy for Kids

Peter Caldow, the current president, is a familiar sight zipping around in his Suzuki Mighty Boy ute. His unique vehicle, complete with convoy stickers and air horns, provides year-round publicity for the cause.

Peter emphasizes that the convoy’s mission extends beyond a single illness. The committee is committed to helping any children with special needs.

The convoy provides immediate, practical support to families. They cover fuel and accommodation costs for trips to specialists in Sydney, Canberra, and Wollongong. This ensures children get help quickly without families facing financial stress.

The support also includes chemist bills and specialized fittings. Furthermore, the convoy reinvests in the local community, donating $15,000 to the Goulburn Hospital’s paediatric ward last year.

A Day of Celebration at the Goulburn Convoy for Kids

Upon arrival at the showgrounds, participants and the public were greeted with a full-blown festival.

Food stands, face painting, and a lolly shop created a vibrant atmosphere. A carnival with nine different rides offered unlimited fun for a single, small entry fee.

Families paid just $10 per child for a stamp that granted all-day, unlimited access to every ride. This initiative ensures the day remains focused on the kids.

The affordable fee makes the event accessible to all while contributing to the overall fundraising goal. It is a perfect example of the event’s core philosophy: giving back to the community.

A highlight of the event is the opportunity to be the lead truck. Participants pay a small extra fee for a chance to win the honor in a draw. This year, the lucky winner was Karsten Gebhardt in his meticulously maintained 1987 W-model Kenworth.

Karsten, a stay-at-home dad, shared his joy while holding his young daughter, Indy. He joked that parenting sometimes feels more challenging than dealing with transport regulations.

Moreover, his dedication to his classic truck is evident. He spent eight years restoring it, a labor of love he continues in his spare time.

The event also featured a truck show, with judges presenting several awards. The coveted “Best Truck” prize went to Matt Webb for his stunning R600 Flintstone Mack. Matt undertook a chassis-up rebuild over nine years.

He even learned to drive a traditional quad-box gearbox just to master the classic vehicle, admitting it is a true art form.

A Record-Breaking Result for the Goulburn Charity for Kids

The 2024 event was a resounding success. Two hundred and fifty trucks participated in the five-kilometer run through Goulburn. Their collective effort, combined with community participation, led to a phenomenal fundraising total.

The committee announced an incredible $108,000 was raised this year. This contribution pushes the total funds raised over the convoy’s 26-year history to nearly one million dollars.
