The Owner Operator Truck App That Fits in Your Pocket
When you’re an owner-operator, you’re the driver, the mechanic’s first call, the bookkeeper and the compliance department, usually all before lunch. The last thing you need is software that takes an hour to figure out.
ManageVehicle gives you an owner operator truck app that keeps it simple. Your work diary, pre-starts and service reminders are all on your phone, and it’s easy enough to use at a truck stop with a coffee in the other hand.
What owner-operators actually need
You don’t need a giant fleet system built for a 300-truck operation. You need a few things done properly:
- A work diary that’s accurate and doesn’t eat your break time
- A quick pre-start you can do in the yard or at the roadside
- Reminders before a service, rego or licence is due
- Records you can pull up fast if you’re pulled over or audited
That’s what we’ve focused on.
What you get on your phone
An NHVR-approved Electronic Work Diary. MV Driver, our Electronic Work Diary, has been on the NHVR’s approved register since 22 September 2026. It records your work and rest time as you go, warns you before you run out of hours, and saves you filling in paper pages at the end of a long day.
Pre-starts in a couple of minutes. Run through your daily check on the app, tick off each item, and snap a photo if something needs attention. Your records are saved with the date and time, so you’ve got proof the check was done.
Service reminders so you’re not caught out. Set your service intervals once and the app reminds you before they’re due. Your truck is your income, so keeping it off the side of the road matters.
Documents where you can find them. Keep rego, insurance and licence details in the app, with a heads-up before anything expires.
Do owner-operators have to use an EWD?
No. An Electronic Work Diary isn’t compulsory. You can still use a paper work diary if you prefer. But a lot of drivers find an EWD easier: it does the maths on your hours, it’s harder to make a mistake that turns into a fine, and you’re not stuck rewriting a smudged page.
It’s also worth knowing the rules haven’t got any softer. After the 2026 HVNL changes, the maximum penalty for fatigue-related duties went up to $26,610. Our guide to fatigue breaches and penalties explains how breaches are categorised.
When do you need a work diary at all?
If you drive a fatigue-regulated heavy vehicle more than 100 km from your base, you generally need to keep a work diary. That 100 km is measured in a straight line from your base, not by road distance, which catches a lot of people out. Our truck driver logbook guide covers the details.
Start small, add more later
If you take on a second truck or a couple of drivers down the track, you don’t need to switch systems. The same app grows with you, and you can add tracking, job management or dashcams when it makes sense.
FAQ
Does the app work without phone reception? The app keeps recording when you lose signal and syncs once you’re back in coverage, which matters on long country runs.
Can I show the EWD to an officer at a roadside check? Yes. Your records can be shown on the device during an inspection, the same way you’d hand over a paper diary.
Is it worth it for a single truck? For most owner-operators, the time saved on paperwork and the lower risk of a costly mistake make it worth it, even with one truck.
