Heavy vehicles temporary variation will be implemented in NSW to ensure smooth traffic flow during Christmas Fall. Specific detours and restrictions are in place for certain heavy vehicle combinations.

NHVR and TfNSW are celebrating their joint efforts to keep the travelling public disturbed while carrying out essential repairs-heavy traffic flows across New South Wales will be kept as smooth as possible.

Key Details of Heavy Vehicles Temporary Variation

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), in discussion with Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW), has announced temporary access variations for heavy vehicles.

These changes, necessary due to repair works on the Spirit of Progress Bridge, Hume Highway, Albury, have been designed with safety as the top priority.

The southbound bridge will be closed to traffic during repair periods, primarily at night, from 8 PM to 6 AM between December 2-7 and December 11-17, weather permitting.

To accommodate this closure of temporary variation, a unique detour route has been created for all heavy southbound vehicles.

Vehicles must travel via East Street, Atkins Street, Hume Street, Wodonga Place, and Lincoln Causeway and return to the Hume Highway at the High Street ramp.

These changes apply to vehicles holding heavy vehicle access permits for this route.

  • HML 25/26m B-Double combinations
  • PBS Level 2B combinations
  • PBS Level 3A combinations
  • HML PBS Level 2A combinations

Operators using these combinations must follow the detour route and adhere to the updated permit conditions. Heavy vehicles with approved permits must only deviate from their designated routes if they obtain a revised permit from NHVR.

Ensuring Safe Travel During the Holidays

The heavy vehicles temporary variation aims to facilitate safe and efficient traffic flow during the busy Christmas travel period.

The NHVR and TfNSW aim to minimize disruption while ensuring they complete essential maintenance by scheduling repairs at night and implementing apparent detours.

Operators shall plan their journeys and keep up-to-date with the latest news concerning heavy vehicle access permits and detours. This temporary variation will allow travel during repair to continue as fuel-free as possible.

The Manage Vehicle team wishes all drivers and fleet operators a safe and joyous holiday season. We appreciate your hard work and dedication during this busy Christmas and New Year 2024 period. Drive safely and enjoy the festivities!
