Getting a truck licence in QLD is mostly about time and the right order. You can’t jump straight from a car licence to driving road trains. You work up through the classes, holding each one for a set period, and pass a practical test with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) along the way.

This guide covers each heavy vehicle class, how long you need to wait between them, the steps to apply, what it costs, and the rules for MC licences and interstate or overseas drivers. Everything is based on TMR’s own requirements as of October 2026. If you’re licensed in another state, our heavy vehicle licence guide covers the national picture.

Truck licence classes in QLD

Queensland uses the same five heavy vehicle classes as the rest of Australia. Each class also covers everything in the classes below it.

Class What you can drive
LR (Light Rigid) A truck or bus over 4.5 tonnes and up to 8 tonnes GVM, or a vehicle up to 8 tonnes seating more than 12 adults including the driver. You can tow a trailer up to 9 tonnes GVM
MR (Medium Rigid) A truck or bus over 8 tonnes GVM with 2 axles, plus a trailer up to 9 tonnes GVM
HR (Heavy Rigid) A truck or bus over 8 tonnes GVM with 3 or more axles, plus a trailer up to 9 tonnes GVM. Also covers articulated (bendy) buses
HC (Heavy Combination) A prime mover with a semi-trailer, or a truck towing a trailer over 9 tonnes GVM
MC (Multi Combination) B-doubles and road trains

Once you upgrade, you get a magenta-coloured licence showing your highest class.

If you’re not sure which class you need, check the GVM on the vehicle’s compliance plate and count the axles. For most local delivery jobs, MR or HR is enough. Linehaul work with semi-trailers needs HC, and B-doubles need MC.

How long you need to hold your licence first

Before you can apply for a higher class, you need to have held your current licence (provisional or open) for a minimum time:

You hold For at least You can go for
C (car) 1 year LR or MR
C (car) 2 years HR
LR or MR 1 year HR
MR or HR 1 year HC
HR or HC 1 year MC

Two details that trip people up:

  • The time must fall within the last 5 years. It can be one continuous stretch or several shorter periods added together, but any time your licence was suspended, cancelled, surrendered or expired doesn’t count.
  • You can’t skip MR or HR to get to HC. HC needs a year on MR or HR. The only exception is a special-need HC licence for people in remote parts of Queensland who need it for work and can’t get access to an MR truck to learn on.

So the fastest path from a car licence to MC is about three years: one year on C, then MR, one year later HC, and one year after that MC.

How to get a truck licence in QLD, step by step

For LR, MR, HR and HC, the process is the same. (MC works differently; see the upgrading section below.)

  1. Check you’re eligible. Make sure you’ve held your current class long enough (see the table above). If some of that time was on an interstate or overseas licence, contact TMR on 13 23 80 before you book anything, as they may need to verify your history.
  2. Learn with a supervisor. Once you hold a provisional or open licence, you’re allowed to learn the next class up. Your supervisor must hold an open licence in that class and have held it for at least a year. You need L plates on the front and rear, a zero alcohol limit, and your licence on you. Driving unaccompanied while learning means 4 demerit points and a fine of over $270.
  3. Get some training. It isn’t compulsory for LR to HC, but most people take lessons with a heavy vehicle driving school, often using the school’s truck for the test too.
  4. Sit the road rules test, if required. There’s a written road rules test for heavy vehicles, with a small fee.
  5. Declare you’re medically fit. You’ll need to declare that you’re fit to drive the higher class. If you have a medical condition that could affect your driving, you’ll need a certificate from your doctor.
  6. Book and pass the practical test. Book online or call 13 23 80, and pay the test fee. The LR test takes around 45 minutes, while tests for the higher classes take about 90 minutes.
  7. Get your new licence. Once you pass, your licence is re-issued with the new class. You don’t need a form at a TMR customer service centre, though police stations and most QGAP offices still ask for form F3000. Your magenta licence arrives in the mail within 21 days.

The full requirements are on the Queensland Government’s upgrading a licence page.

What a truck licence in QLD costs

The government fees are the small part:

Fee Approximate cost
Written road rules test (heavy vehicle) $28.70
Practical driving test (any class) $67.15

These figures come from LTrent’s summary of TMR fees. TMR fees usually rise each 1 July, so check the official Queensland licence fees page before you budget.

The real cost is training. Driving school prices vary a lot depending on the class, how many lessons you need, and whether you hire the school’s truck for the test. Get quotes from two or three schools. For MC, the training is compulsory unless you qualify for the experience pathway (see below), so build it into your plan.

If your employer needs you upgraded for a job, ask whether they’ll cover the training. Many transport companies do, especially when they’re short of HC and MC drivers.

Upgrading to HR, HC and MC

Moving from MR to HR, or from HR to HC, follows the same seven steps above: wait your year, learn with a supervisor, then pass the practical test.

MC is different. TMR doesn’t run practical tests for MC. Instead, after holding HR or HC for at least a year, you qualify through training or experience:

You hold What you need to do
HR Complete the unit Drive Multi-combination Vehicle (TLIC4006) with a TMR-approved MC training provider, with at least 16 hours of training and assessment
HC Either complete the same unit with at least 8 hours of training and assessment, or submit a multi-combination driving experience declaration (form F3272) signed by your employer, with evidence of regular and substantial MC driving at work

You then take your statement of attainment (or the declaration) to TMR with your ID, complete form F3000, declare you’re medically fit, and pass an eyesight test if required.

Special-need HC licence. If you live in a remote or very remote part of Queensland, hold a C or LR licence, need HC for work, and can’t access an MR truck to learn on, you may be able to go straight to HC. You apply with form F3759 and proof of where you live.

Each step up usually means better pay. Our truck driver salary guide breaks down what drivers earn by class and state.

Moving to Queensland with an interstate or overseas licence

From another Australian state. Your heavy vehicle class transfers when you change to a Queensland licence. If you’re planning to upgrade and some of your waiting time was on the interstate licence, call TMR on 13 23 80 before you book a test so they can confirm your history counts.

From overseas. It depends on where your licence was issued:

  • New Zealand. If you hold, or held in the last 5 years, an equivalent NZ heavy vehicle licence, you usually only need to pass the heavy vehicle road rules test. No practical test.
  • Recognised countries. You first get a Queensland car licence by passing the road rules and practical tests. Then you pass the heavy vehicle road rules test and the practical test for the class you want.
  • Other countries. Expect to sit the road rules test and a practical driving test.

The country lists change from time to time, so check TMR’s overseas licence transfer page for your country before you plan anything. We also cover the wider picture in our guide to converting an international licence in Australia.

Once you’ve got your truck licence: the rules that come with it

Your licence class is only the start. Once you drive a truck over 12 tonnes GVM, which includes many MR and most HR, HC and MC vehicles, you’re driving a fatigue-regulated heavy vehicle under the Heavy Vehicle National Law. That brings three things new drivers often aren’t ready for:

• Work and rest limits. Under Standard Hours, a solo driver can work up to 12 hours in any 24-hour period, with at least 7 continuous hours of stationary rest. See our guide to work and rest hours for the full limits.
• A work diary. If you drive more than 100 km from your base, you need to record your hours. Our guide to the logbook for truck drivers explains who needs one and how it works.
• Fitness to drive. Since 1 August 2026, you must not drive any heavy vehicle over 4.5 tonnes GVM if you’re unfit to drive safely, whether from fatigue, illness, medication or anything else.

Many operators now use an electronic work diary instead of the paper book. Manage Vehicle’s MV Driver is NHVR approved and records your work and rest as you go, so you always know when your next break is due.

FAQs

How long does it take to get a truck licence in QLD?

You need a car licence for at least 1 year before LR or MR, and 2 years before HR. From there, each step up needs another year. The fastest path from a car licence to MC is about three years.

Can I go straight from a car licence to HR?

Yes, once you’ve held your car licence (provisional or open) for at least 2 years. You don’t have to get LR or MR first.

What’s the biggest truck I can drive on a car licence?

A class C licence covers vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes GVM. Anything heavier needs at least an LR licence.

Do I need a medical for a truck licence?

You need to declare that you’re medically fit to drive the higher class. If you have a medical condition that could affect your driving, you’ll also need a certificate from your doctor.

Is there a practical test for an MC licence in Queensland?

No. TMR doesn’t run MC tests. You qualify by completing approved MC training (16 hours if you hold HR, 8 hours if you hold HC), or, for HC holders, through an employer-signed experience declaration.

Is it truck licence or truck license?

In Australia the noun is spelt “licence”, but people search for both. They mean the same thing, and the rules here apply either way.
